April 19, 2011 - Day 54: MAZEL TOV!
The 19th was my first seder. It was up in the mountains somewhere in an enormous house. There were over 30 people, many of whom were not Jewish.
We started off the seder with a Syrian song used for introducing people. It’s a call and response that the whole group does. It’s pretty cool. The first person starts off holding matzah bread in a cloth over their shoulder like they are leaving Egypt.
Group: What’s your name?
My name is _____
Group: Where are you coming from?
Group: Where are you going to?
All: MAZEL TOV!
They pass the matzah around the entire circle so that we’ve heard everyone’s name. And I have to say, shouting Mazel TOV! again and again and raising your arms up all excited is like the most fun you can ever have with a group of sober adults.
So ‘Isreal-Palestine’ and ‘Jews considering Egypt the oppressors’ aside, if you’ve never been to a seder I suggest you attend one at least once in your life.
